Healthcare4Illinois is a new grassroots movement dedicated to building a realistic path toward better healthcare in Illinois.

We believe the people who live with our healthcare system every day should have a meaningful voice in helping improve it. Healthcare reform should not be designed solely by politicians, lobbyists, consultants, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, or any other special interest. It should be informed by the experiences and ideas of patients, healthcare workers, hospitals, employers, emergency responders, policy experts, community organizations, and everyday Illinois residents.

Why We Started

For decades, many healthcare reform advocates have focused primarily on national solutions. We continue to believe our country ultimately needs universal healthcare, such as Medicare for All or another system that guarantees affordable healthcare for everyone.

But while Washington continues to debate, healthcare costs continue rising.

  • Insurance premiums continue increasing.

  • Deductibles and copays continue becoming harder to afford.

  • Prescription drug prices continue climbing.

  • Hospitals continue struggling.

  • Families continue facing medical debt.

  • Too many people continue delaying or skipping care because they simply cannot afford to use the insurance they already have.

  • People are getting sicker. Some are losing everything financially. Some are dying while waiting for change.

Healthcare4Illinois asks a simple question:

What can Illinois do now?
The Illinois Care Initiative

One of the goals of the Illinois Care Initiative is to encourage Illinois to adopt a new, transparent healthcare reform process called the Illinois Care Process.

The Illinois Care Process does not begin with predetermined answers.

It begins by listening.

Instead of asking a handful of insiders to design healthcare reform behind closed doors, the process would invite people from every corner of Illinois to help build it together.

Community forums would be held throughout the state where people could share their healthcare experiences, identify problems, suggest solutions, and help set priorities:

  • Patients.

  • Healthcare workers.

  • Hospitals.

  • Emergency responders.

  • Employers.

  • Labor organizations.

  • Community organizations.

  • Policy experts.

  • Local government.

  • And everyday Illinois residents.

Everyone deserves a seat at the table.

Learning Before Legislating

Healthcare reform should not start from scratch.

One of the goals of the Illinois Care Initiative is to learn from reforms that have already succeeded while avoiding mistakes that have caused other efforts to fail.

That is why we created the Illinois Healthcare Situation Report.

The Situation Report is not a healthcare plan. It is not proposed legislation. It does not claim to have all the answers. Instead, it identifies many of the healthcare challenges Illinois faces today, examines successful reforms already operating elsewhere, including Maryland's nationally recognized hospital payment reforms, and provides a foundation for public discussion.

Think of it like a home inspection report. It identifies what appears to need attention.

The people of Illinois help decide how to fix it.

Our Immediate Goal

Before any of this can happen, the process itself must be created.

Our immediate goal is to encourage Governor JB Pritzker to commit to launching the Illinois Care Process beginning in 2027.

Under our proposal, the Governor would establish a Healthcare Reform Commission that would:

  • Listen to people throughout Illinois.

  • Hold public forums across all 102 counties.

  • Stream meetings online and make them publicly available.

  • Evaluate public ideas with healthcare, legal, and policy experts.

  • Develop practical recommendations.

  • Draft legislation where appropriate.

  • Release proposals for public comment.

  • Forward final recommendations to the Illinois General Assembly for consideration.

  • Continue working after initial reforms are completed to address future healthcare challenges as they arise.

Healthcare reform should be an ongoing public process, not a one-time event.

Healthcare4Illinois officially launched on May 5, 2026.

Everything you see today has been built almost entirely by volunteers.

Our first priority has been researching healthcare, developing the Illinois Care Initiative, organizing community forums, and beginning conversations with people across Illinois.

Building a comprehensive website with research resources, videos, documents, event information, and tools for public participation is one of our highest priorities.

Like every grassroots movement, however, that takes resources.
